Artist's Description

The Maasai are an age-ranked culture. For a man to become a junior elder (and thereby able to wed) he must have completed each prior stage of life—herdsman and warrior—with his age group. He becomes a junior elder at about 25 years of age. This is Peter.

For those who wonder about the spelling of Maasai: The people who speak the language Maa are known as Maasai with the double aa. The land is known as Masai. And for the record, many of the Maasai also speak Kiswahili and English.
