Artist's Description

On Saturday, my girlfriend went for an interview, so her Dad and I walked around the main drag in Clayton for a bit.

We came across a custom framing shop, so had a look.

We were greeted by Max, the sole owner and operator.
He started of with small talk about the weather, but he was soon giving us a good run down on his life.

He was a journalist with the London Times, and had a Dutch girlfriend.
The time came for his parents to employ a marriage broker, so his boss suggested marrying his Dutch lady and moving to the Australian office.

Back in 1959 you needed to prove through Genealogy that you had 85% European blood to immigrate to Australia.
Luckily he had the name Anthony Maxwell Allis, a suitably English name that got him into the country at least.

Upon the first day of work at the London Times office, he was told “no coloured people” and thus promptly out of work.

Max found work at the Salvation Army, but even there his work “mates” requested that they all have lunch at a separate time than him.

Going to the local pub after work proved embarrassing, with signs reading “No Dogs or Black People”, despite work “mates” ushering him in.
When it was Max’s shout, he had to give the money to a colleague, as he was never served.

Eventually he got into framing, and has carved out a living, good enough to live with he says.

He still lights a candle for his Father everyday.

Max had plenty to share, and I will go back to see him at some stage.
He was eager to share his experiences, and one hell of a nice guy.

He also mentioned about starting a 21 bed Hospital in Clayton a long time ago, I will have to get the exact details next time.

Things sure have changed for the better…
