A sugar coated history

History, I’m told, is written by the winners,
Who distort facts, erase them, make their dirty deeds cleaner,
When we leaf through Bugs World 6, it seems to be the case,
In the story of Hernán Cortés, the writers left no trace,
Of the crimes perpetrated on the Aztec race,
Instead we get to hear, of how Spain’s Cortés dear,
Brought chocolate back to Europe, without spreading death and fear
If I had a say, I’d tell kids of the day,
Cortés used divide and rule to get his own way,
In his pointy metal hat,
He squashed those Aztecs flat,
And stole all their gold like a big greedy rat,
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m the first to confess,
The British weren’t saints. I like our history less.
I guess we’ve all got our skeletons in the closet.
I just wish we wouldn’t try so hard to sugarcoat it.
