Artist's Description

This is Charles, a mountain gorilla who lives in the Virunga Volcanoes, Rwanda. He is tenderly watching over his son who is playing amongst the leaves. You can also make out the hand of his playmate, in the bottom left corner of the pic.

There are currently around 700 of these magnificent creatures left in the world. Some are slaughtered for the bushmeat trade, some for “trophies” such as hands and feet.

It was wonderful to visit them, they are so gentle and loving. Some people asked, “Were you scared??” And no, I say, I wasn’t. Like most animals, they will only be aggressive if you pose a threat to them, which we didn’t. We sat quietly amongst the vegetation, gazing in awe and wonder, until our precious hour was up. That is all that’s allowed each day. Even the guides seem to keep a sense of childlike delight, which is wonderful, considering how often they see them.
