Artist's Description

We visited an elephant sanctuary in near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Many of the elephants had wandered onto farmers’ crops as a result of deforestation. The locals sometimes shot them. Part of the sanctuary’s remit is to educate the farmers into not doing this and to encourage them to call the charity so they can rescue the elephants. Sometimes the elephants are so distressed that an experienced motherly elephant will be brought along to show compassion and comfort them. Sometimes this involves a gentle touch of a trunk.

This lovely elephant and I made a wonderful connection. I kept looking at her and she kept looking at me. Then she made a bee-line for me and touched my head. It was wonderful. I took her trunk and blew down it. I was the only one she approached and the staff tried to discourage it, but she wasn’t to be deterred and kept coming back. You can see why meeting with certain animals can be very profound and healing. It certainly was for me.
