Artist's Description

We visited a very poor village in the countryside of Sabah, Borneo. (Malaysia). These children’s parents were from Indonesia and were employed to work on the palm oil plantations. They earned $1 a day. (The parents – not the children). These kids were too poor to go to school. They liked my bubbles and a couple of small toys we brought with us. We also gave them a few pens and some paper, but it was litterally a small drop in a very large ocean.

Nearby was a large crocodile pit – this was a special place where crocs were bred for the landowner. They said they were gonna release them but we weren’t so sure. We also saw poor angry macaques which were kept as pets. They were chained to perches and were so traumatised and sad. Such a mixture of emotions…
