Artist's Description

I love gibbons. They are so beautiful with their lovely faces and wonderful bodies. This pic makes me feel sad though. But he was very happy just before this, swinging around and enjoying himself. I shall never forget waking up in the Borneo rainforest and hearing their otherwordly prehistoric whoops…

This is Samuel, who lives at Bristol Zoo.

White-cheeked gibbons are found in Laos, Vietnam, and southern China in evergreen tropical rainforests and monsoon forests.

Gibbons have a home range of about 75 to 100 acres (0.3 to 0.4 km2) and travel about one mile (1.6 km) per day through this range. They defend approximately three-quarters of their range as their group territory. Defense takes the form of calls from the center of the territory, calls from the boundaries, confrontations across the boundaries, chasing across the boundaries, and, rarely, physical contact between males. Gibbons are arboreal and spend most of their time in the canopy. They rarely stay on the ground for very long.

All gibbons are endangered, largely due to deforestation. They are also hunted and trapped for the pet trade.
