as old as stone

These words are not carved in stone
the stone is in the words
divided against itself like two sides of a wall
unknown to each other to be one and the same
a stoney silence is a sentence
unpunctuated hidden inside each stone
word
words laid down and built up
on foundations with interlocking grooves
made by blades of grass
which are words full of stones
green stones
sun stones
hard words moonstones
and blood stones
did I not speak them first from inside
the dreaming stones?
once I stole a beautiful stone from a wall
and carried it all the way to exhaustion
and back
once I polished stone with the sand of stones
and ocean’s of salt
I wrote stone on stone
weighty and noisy words hail stones
thrown from the sky
glossy beach stones working their way back
to star light
cornerstones carved out of time’s discards
the star fish and the luminous pearls
of extinction
empty dark words unbaited for abyssal fishes
without eyes for their appetites
hungry stones that sweat in the palms
and the shoes lost among illusions
these boulders contain many voluminous books
bound by diaphanous fingerprints that hold
stone against stone
rocking in an alphabet on a tablet
and our headstones erect gathering strength
from names as old as stone
bread stone and the stone altars of sacrifice
the heart of stone
inside and out the same
