Artist's Description

Beautiful image from a 19th Century Engraving. A little boy from Savoy sits in a country village. During the 19th Century, the boys of Savoy (the alpine region of France) left their villages in the winter to work as chimney sweeps across France. It was a difficult and often exploitative situation for the children, which was often romanticized by others in France – the boys were know as Les Petits Savoyards, and were frequently depicted in popular art and souvenirs.
