Artist's Description

An adult Koala sleeping soundly in the morning sun at Currumbin Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Currumbin, Queensland, Australia.

In the wild Koalas are found mostly in Eastern Australia and eat only Eucalyptus Leaves. They can eat up to 21/2 lb a day and need about 100 trees per animal, which is why they are disappearing as their environment shrinks due to the spread of urban living. They don’t drink much water, but get most of their fluid from the leaves and can sleep up to 18 hours a day sleeping in the trees, spending the nights foraging. In spite of popular belief, and their Teddy Bear looks, they are not a true bear but are part of the Marsupial family and baby Koalas are carried in their mothers pouch for about 6 months after birth.

Canon EOS 550D. Canon EF 100-400L lens.
