Artist's Description

This doll I knitted named “Joyous” is from two cultures.

First she is a child, a member of the youth culture. She has that freshness of being and of spirit that we are all born with and have until…we let it go or someone tears it from us. Some of us hang on for dear life. We let our inner child shine.

Secondly, she is African-American. She has knowledge of her motherland but her homeland culture is where her heart is. She is the new generation who knows she is represented in the white house, at last. Reasons to be joyous, yes we can!

This doll was based on a knitting pattern taught at the Waldorf schools. She is about 5" tall and I didn’t know who she was at first, like all the dolls I create. She emerged as I worked. Here she is full of spunk and joy!
