This image was influenced by my favourite artist of all time – JM Turner. His image of Flint Castle with all the wonderful colours and all the different things happening on the beach was my inspiration.

Here, I wanted to create a modern-day take on that image. My starting point was one of my own photos of Margate beach…

Turner went to school in Margate, which is just near my home and he painted many of the glorious sunsets that we have here. I loved his painting for its wonderful colours and for the sheer life that is going on in the picture.

The New Turner Contemporary Gallery is currently being built in Margate as a tribute to Turner, and it is hoped that it will help regenerate the town, which is now so run-down and forgotten, it is sad.

Here, I wanted to create a scene that depicted lots of activity and people on the beach, at the end of one of those balmy summer evenings.

This was created in CS4. I started with the image of Margate beach (see above) and overlaid it with several of textures which I created myself. Much digital painting was done, using Photoshop media brushes.

Everything in the image was cut out seperately and blended in. The way I do this is to duplicate several layers for each thing that is being inserted, and then use different layer modes and opacities for each. I then use layer masks to paint out the effects that I do not want. I think I might try and do a tutorial on this process at some time, if anyone would be interested.

Most of the people and boats are from my own stock except for the following…
Main Boat
Fisherman with Pots
Two Children holding hands

I really hope that you will like it.

The music I was playing all the time I was creating this was the wonderful Kenny Gee playing ‘Summertime’.
