This House

Years from now when they are gone
will anyone remember
the inhabitants of this home?

When the trim gardens have disappeared
and the yard unkempt has grown,
will anyone remember?

A family lived life to the fullest-
loved, hated, hoped, and despaired
beneath this decaying roof.

In the future, will a neighbor walking
pause, in remembrance, thinking-
“Yes, in this house they did live?”

I think none save this house
shall remember any of us,
as it crumbles resignedly into the dust
with a tired drawn-out sigh.

But who among us, nursed within these walls
will still be alive to remember
this house, these cobwebbed halls?
