Picture at an Exhibition

I looked at the picture
Turned away
Turned back again
It sparked a memory
Long forgotten

The picture was not a game
The memory was
I wracked my mind
For many a long day
So many lines reaching skyward
Is warfare a game?
I don’t think so!

Reality is in the balance
Between life and death
I think I remember the game

The Game.

You gather your armies
Tightly on the land
You let them fall
Randomly
Who will get hurt?

Now we have to work out
How to pick them up
One or maybe two at a time
Without disturbing
The others

Removing them
From something that looks like
A bundle of sticks
We must pick them up
To be used again and again
To reach for the arms
For the next battle scene

I think I remember the game
