Artist's Description

The Occupy Melbourne Protests started in October 2011 and this one was taken at town square on 5 November 2011

Her signs refer to the actions taken by the Melbourne Major, Roddy Doyle to evict the protestors from Town Square.

For those that don’t know the Major used the police to evict the protestors from the square. There was a degree of police violence and loss of protestor property during the eviction.

The loss of property resulted from council workers gathering up the protestors tents and other personal property and disposing them at the rubbish tip.

As a side comment a major legal firm has volunteered to work pro bono for the protestors to gain compensation for the property loss.

Large legal firms don’t usually pursue frivolous legal claims so it is likely the City of Melbourne may have exceeded its powers confiscating and disposing of the demonstrator’s property.

At best the City will have a hefty legal defence bill and at worst there will be a large compensation payable to the demonstrators for their loss.

I guess heavy handedness has a cost.
