Parasites of numbfish, Hypnos monopterygium, at Bare Island, La Perouse, New South Wales, Australia. Depth 9.2 metres.

Nikon D300, Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D, +4 diopter, Ikelite housing and dome port, 2 x DS125 stobes

ISO 200, 1/125s, f/11

I spotted this numbfish (Hypnos monopterygium) while on a night dive. Numbfish are a type of ray that can give a severe electric shock when touched. The shock usually isn’t dangerous but is unwelcome.

As I got closer to the numbfish, I noticed a parasitic isopod (“fish louse”) attached just behind the eyes. I took a number of macro photographs of the isopod. When I was reviewing the photographs, I realised that in addition to the isopod, there were also 3 leeches. The black one is attached to the numbfish and the two smaller brown ones appear to be attached to the isopod. It was a nice bonus.
