October

October is
a golden time of year
when herald weather
trumpets loud
on shuttered doors,

A time of year
when clouds
like chiffon caught
against the breeze,
race mad and wild
as heaven’s lording
chariots.

When browned and dying leaves
forsake the trees,
as souls departing fife,
to set the branches bare
to face the worst
that winter’s hand can do;

When long and gentle eves give way
to earlier dusk,
as chill and frosting winds
cast out the summer airs
and bonfire smoke
is given rightful place
in memory.

Artist's Description

This is October as it has always been to me. Most memorable to me is the smell of bonfire smoke as summer’s garden detritus is burnt away and the resultant ash is dug in for next years growth to feed upon..
