Artist's Description

Please view large. We took a drive out to Riversdale yesterday to visit Horatio the Hawk… he is recovering well and will soon return to the wild. The Gore area had a Hoar frost on Saturday night, it is something I have never seen before…. That made the journey even more special… I was blow away by the beauty of the tiny ice crystals sparkling like diamonds in every tree. Each branch was coated in tiny jewels sparkling in the sunshine.. The contrast of the white trees against the green pastures, blue river and rolling hills was just breath taking. The sun was slowly melting the frost and under each tree it looked like fairy glitter dust floating to the ground… I could have spent hours just imagining the fairy’s sprinkling magical dust on the trees and watching the magical beauty of nature…. the permanent freezing fog during a cold winter’s night causes a “hoar frost”, beautifull ice crystals grow over everything giving the whole area a Narnia feel.. Fairy Dust – Tree Coated In Hoar Frost

Hoar Frost Collage – NZ

Hoar Frost River Valley

Under clear frosty nights in winter soft ice crystals might form on vegetation or any object that has been chilled below freezing point by radiation cooling. This deposit of ice crystals is known as hoarfrost and may sometimes be so thick that it might look like snow. The interlocking ice crystals become attached to branches of trees, leafs, hedgerows and grass blades and are one of the most prominent features of a typical ‘winter wonderland’ day. However, the fine ‘feathers’, ‘needles’ and ‘spines’ might also be found on any other object that is exposed to supersaturated air below freezing temperature.
