Artist's Description

This baby chick was with its mother an only child on the 1 acre block next door, along with 15+ hens and 1 cockerel. I always take them some scraps and while there yesterday noted that the other hens were pecking this poor baby, the mother was frantic, but helpless to defend her baby against so many jealous hens… Hens are always very suspicious of any other new birds that come on to ‘their’ territory, and will always peck and chase them, maybe even killing them. This is true even when the new ones are chicks accompanied by their mother hen. I could not bear it, and knew that it would die if I left it there. I scooped it up and brought it home, where it will have love, care, food, shelter and warmth. The Dove and the Chick – (Named Chickadee!) are company for one another while it is still small, till the chicken grows too big. Although they may become the best of friends, you never know… Yip…Big softy, that’s me, can not bear to see any animal suffer. If the mother had other chicks they were probably killed.. so at least this little one will have a fair chance at life… Would you have done the same thing?
I Was Saved From The Deadly Pecking Order!!!!

Black Rock hens use the ground well, happily ranging around gardens, over fields, and they love woodlands. Great egg quality in shell colour, shell quality, and egg size throughout the laying period this is one of their most notable features. They have excellent feed conversion in whatever weather. Black Rock chickens are docile but full of character – they are easy to rear and simple to keep,(although, being naturally curious, not always easy to keep out of the back door!) Appearance may not be high on everyone’s criteria but the green shine from black feathers in the sun is magic, set off with the chestnut feathering around the neck.
