Artist's Description

The Amethyst Sun-bird, also called the Black Sun-bird (Chalcomitra amethystina), is a species of bird in the Nectariniidae family. This species of sun-bird mainly occurs in Africa south of the equator, and generally favours woodland and gardens. It is particularly partial to concentrations of nectar-bearing plants these being predominantly aloes and proteas.
They have long thin down-curved bills and brush-tipped tubular tongues, both adaptations to their nectar feeding, a food supply which is supplemented with insects. It often hawks flying insects from the trees or bushes, or gleans them from leaves and branches. It also eats spiders in addition to using their cobwebs to bind its nest, a pear-shaped structure suspended from a branch, made of lichen, grass, stalks, leaves and bark. This is the little female Amethyst Sun-bird on a red hibiscus flower. Chartwell Fourways South Africa Oct. 2013 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200
