Artist's Description

So, this cicada shell was just hanging on a tree as if it had just landed there with no cicada body inside.

It’s interesting how these insects leave their shells behind and start a new life. It would be odd if people did the same thing. I think of all the times I’ve faced major changes in my life, and what “shells” I would have left behind. There would be the shell of my pre-children self, and the shell of my childhood, and the shell of a marriage that ended badly… and probably a few more.

Gee, I’m really glad we don’t have exoskeletons to shed. Our outgrown selves are invisible… but much harder to shed.
