A Poem For China In Ten Parts

I

Queuing at the Post Office for
money, they gave me
400 yuan,
and told me it was worth
£30 and somehow when I walked out,
I still felt rich.

II

I said goodbye to you all properly,
just in case,
in case something did happen.
Not that I thought it would,
but just in case.

III

The cupboards are empty,
the drawers bare,
the suitcase standing open
in the middle of the floor.

IV

I cannot find enough pairs
of pants that are pretty enough
to take on holiday and still impress
people.

V

I have piled everything up on the
bed now in a desperate attempt to get
everything packed before morning.
All the piles of clothes look so beautiful.

VI

Packed away the suitcase seems smaller.
It holds my heart and life now,
I press my hands to the towel on the
top and pray to god to keep it safe.
Keep it all safe.
It’s not like I’d find clothes to fit in
China, now.

VII

I said goodbye and promised you I’d bring
you back a present – something small and green.
My english teacher asked for a panda and a chinese
baby.
I wasn’t sure if she was joking.

VIII

You gave me four packets of chocolate and twenty
four cereal bars, and ten packets of dried
apricots,
because you didn’t want me to get hungry.
I only packed half of them but I packed them
with love.

IX

I wrote in my diary and tucked it away with the
chargers and pills and letters and socks
and zipped up the case and brought up
the scales to weigh it.
Eleven kilograms.
I feel prouder of that than of my exam results.

X

Now I am too excited to sleep,
and stay up writing poems.

Tomorrow I fly to the other side of the world.
