A panorama from the Lumix FZ35 of a strong storm front on 28 January 1010. – a closer shot of this image, taken from the fence on the right of this image, has been very popular here on RB.

A strong storm shelf cloud approaching Terranora, NSW during the afternoon. We got not one drop from this monster, dumped it all to the west out there. And considering I have driven hundreds of kilometres in my van chasing storms, and walked over the road, 100m from my house, to capture this – one of the best storm clouds I have personally seen – it really does make you wonder!

Shelf couds belong to the Arcus cloud group – low, horizontal cloud formations. Roll clouds and shelf clouds are the two types of arcus clouds. A shelf cloud is usually associated with the leading edge of thunderstorm outflow; roll clouds (such as the Gulf of Carpentaria’s ‘Morning Glory’ annual event) are usually formed by outflows of cold air from sea breezes or cold fronts in the absence of thunderstorms.
