Artist's Description

My first fairyslipper photo in 2011. Taken near the rim of Bear Creek Canyon in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana, USA. West of Victor, MT.

The Calypso orchid (Calypso bulbosa) is also known as the fairyslipper or Venus’ slipper. It is a perennial member of the orchid family found in undisturbed northern and montane forests.

It is the only species currently classified in the genus Calypso and takes its name from the Greek signifying concealment. This perennial grows in sheltered areas on conifer forest floors. Bulbosa refers to the bulb-like corms.
