Artist's Description

There’s a little cheese shop (Valby Ostelager) on a historic stretch of cobblestone streets and old architecture in my neighborhood. On my initial visit, the cheesemonger nailed exactly what I wanted on the first try, giving me something delicious after all I could muster was, “I want something with those crunchy crystals.”

Afterwards, I made my way to a bakery I’ve been eying that makes all their bread with sourdough starter (Vores Brød). That place is a dream. [note: they’re not next to each other in real life, but dang, that would be wonderful!]

Coming from the U.S., we’d refer to this as “European-style shopping” where you gather goods from multiple small shops instead of one giant store. And while it seems that the grocery culture here is evolving more and more toward the stores in which you can buy milk, toilet paper, and furniture all in one stop, I am so glad that many specialty shops still exist. There’s something really special about walking into a place and talking to someone who is a total expert on their niche. The selection is often wide, and I find that I learn so much and discover new things each time I take the time to stop in.

This piece was Day 70 in my series called “How to Fall in Love with Denmark through Food in 100 Days.”
