Artist's Description

A burl (American English) or bur or burr (used in all non-US English speaking countries) is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds.

This tree is in a park in Upper Montclair NJ and unfortunately MOST of the trees in this park have a lot of burls. there is one that is actually totally hollow and appears to be very old, so I am guessing some disease ate the entire inside of the tree . I will post an image of that tree next.
