Plant the flowers in the field, Mom… the JOY will come! These are the words that whispered in my head as I painted this piece for a tribute art show in memory of my late son, Joshua D. Walker Broomfield.
This piece not only has a handpainted piece of rice paper mounted to birch wood as a foundation, it also has about seven layers of highly pigmented wax paint (R&F) atop the initial painting to develop a sense of fullness: a field of flowers.
I draw and paint my backgrounds and/or foundation work (using wax pastels, watercolor, oil) then use a pancake griddle to liquify colored wax and continue painting with brushes, sticks, and other tools. Once the ALL the painting is done I coat most of these works with a clear layer to wax medium for preservation.
