Since I started back painting, there have been a few key people who have encouraged me to draw more… to try and add a bit of detail to any figurative work I do, etc.

Way back in the mid-90s, all I painted was faceless men and women because I was so intimidated by portrait art… I leaned more toward abstract than realism and my inner child felt good.

Then I met portrait artist,
Alga Washington ,
in 2010
and when I told her,
“I can paint but I can’t draw” ,
she gently echoed
my own words back to me:
“There’s no such thing as can’t!”

So… as I do more drawing, I’m finding it easier to learn by practicing on the face I know best… my own. This self-portrait of me in my new glasses was drawn on my iPad and transferred to a sheet of plain scratch paper so I could paint and embellish it.

The painting was made using acrylic, rhinestones, alcohol ink, and india ink on 6″ × 9″ plain white paper.
