Six One

It’s 11:30pm. All of the streetlights and building lights are out again. The Downer street looks like a ghost town. The story is on every local TV station. The cause has not been found. Some say ghosts from the past are causing the problem. Others say its aliens and yet others say it is a government test, a new way to conserve energy.

Kathy is standing next to the original Georgia O’Keefe painting in the master bedroom of the top penthouse in the Gwendeel apartment complex. She hears someone in the living room knock over a large vase.

The Gwendeel apartment complex has been robbed four times this month. Kathy realizes there must be a robber in the apartment. She feels her way to the bedroom door and picks up the DeMarini CF3 baseball bat she had placed there. Her heart is pumping blood so fast that she feels she may faint. She has never been this scared. She feels her way down the hall but stops as she hears another person breathing as they slowly pass in front of her. She holds her breath and wonders why the person did not see her. Did the robber not bring a flashlight? Are they unaware of the apartment buildings recent history of lights going out after 11:30pm?

Kathy has been living in this building for 3 months. Due to her blindness she was given a touch and feel, walk through tour of the entire building, each apartment design, each entrance and exit. Just in case she was visiting other tenants, in an emergency, she would be able to find her way to safety.

Kathy has the advantage. She tip-toes back down the hall, following in the robbers foot steps. She hears the robber moving items in the master bedroom.

As Kathy carefully enters the room, the sounds stop. She knows he senses her there. In the silence she cannot tell where he is in the room. She needs to find out where the robber is. She says in a low voice “How tall are you?” The robber laughs and answers sinisterly “I am 6’2” and you’re dead!” She moves quickly to his left. To pinpoint where he is she says “You picked a bad time for a robbery since all of the lights are out” He yells “If I can’t see then neither can you and you’re still dead”.

She quietly follows his voice, maneuvers behind him and swings her bat as hard as she can, smashing his head. As he is falling down Kathy says quite calmly “You told me a little white lie, you are only 5’11” and I do not see with my eyes I see with my ears”.

Kathy steps over the fallen robber, goes back to the Georgia O’Keefe painting and removes it from the wall. Using her keen hearing she unlocks the hidden safe, removes all of the hidden jewelry and thinks to herself “A couple more robberies and I will be able to move from the fifth floor to the 10th floor”.
