Artist's Description

I found what I can best refer to as a ‘Car Graveyard’ when I was in Morgan (in the Riverland region of South Australia) recently. Around 20 old cars just rotting away in a field.

As far a I can gather from my research (about 2 minutes’ worth on Google images and Wikipedia! :P ) this is a 1940s Ford Prefect E493A utility (someone please correct me if I’m wrong).

I reversed the tripod column so that my camera was almost sitting on the ground for this image. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens used was set to its widest focal length of 10mm and I placed the camera very close to the car to create an ‘in your face’ kind of image.

Due to the difficult lighting conditions and the absence of any supplementary lighting, this image (and the other 3 in the series that I have also uploaded) was blended using 3 to 4 different images. The blending was done manually using luminosity blending techniques in Photoshop CS4, involving the use of luminosity masks and my trusty Wacom tablet.

After the blended image was complete, I then performed the black and white conversion (also in Photoshop CS4), which I felt was the best way to portray these scenes.

Taken with Canon EOS 40D camera, using Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens, tripod mounted with live-view used to focus and remote control used to release shutter. High-speed burst mode was also used to capture the 3 RAW exposures needed in very quick succession.
