Kaleidoscope Hope

‘Sit here where I can see you, Kelly.’
Benny pried the little girl off his hip and settled her into the beanbag he brought along to every concert for her.
‘Here, I have something for you.’
He watched as she unwrapped it. When the purple plastic tube was finally revealed, he smiled at her confused expression.
‘It’s a kaleidoscope. Have you seen one before?’ Kelly shrugged. ‘Put this end up to your eye, then turn this circle at the other end. It’s magic. Give it a try.’
Kelly took the kaleidoscope warily. As she twisted the tube, Benny saw a wide smile spread across her face.

As the music started, Kelly began to twist the kaleidoscope in rhythm with the drums. In the depths of the tube, she saw fireworks, the stained glass windows of a church, the universe changing constantly to the tune of its own making.
Lost in the world of vibrant colour and beautiful patterns, Kelly finally saw heaven. She gasped in wonder as two familiar figures waved and smile at her through the glittering starbursts.
They looked like angels, perfect and unmarred by the accident that had taken them away from her. The image of their bodies as she had last seen them was never far from her mind. It terrified her that she couldn’t remember anything about them except for those last horrible moments before she’d passed out.
Now that memory was melting away, replaced by these angelic visions.
Kelly smiled back at her parents, feeling something she thought she’d never feel again. Hope.

‘Finally found something to interest her, Benny?’ Darlene remarked as the curtains closed for intermission.

Benny nodded, ‘It’s the first time I’ve seen her truly happy since the accident. I wish she could tell me what she is seeing.’
Benny headed over to check on his niece. She looked up as he approached, her smile as broad as ever.
Benny stared in surprise. It had been a year since she’d uttered a sound.
‘Magic!’ she repeated.
Benny wrapped his arms around her, tears of hope flowing down his cheeks.
