Golden Angel

‘Time to put the angel on the tree, Holly,’ Frank smiled down at his beaming young daughter as she held the ornament close to her chest, ‘You ready?’
Holly nodded enthusiastically. Decorating the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve was her favourite family tradition.
Her family didn’t have much – no money for presents or a big turkey dinner – but they had Christmas spirit and a big box of wooden ornaments that had been passed down for generations.
The large angel Holly held in her arms was brand new though and very special.
On the last day of school, Holly had been sitting at the back of the classroom trying to hold back the hot tears of envy that threatened to spill down her cheeks as the other children exchanged gifts.
Unable to afford to buy a gift to participate in the Secret Santa game, she had remained as quiet as a mouse and tried to blend into her surroundings so that nobody would tease her, or worse, pity her.
Mrs Beck, Holly’s teacher, had silently walked up to Holly’s desk and handed her a beautifully wrapped package with a smile. Mrs Beck pressed a finger to her lips secretively before gliding away again.
Surprised and excited, Holly had opened the box with trembling fingers and gazed down at the beautiful golden angel in wonder. Glancing up quickly in astonishment and gratitude, Holly smiled as Mrs Beck winked at her.
Made of smooth porcelain, the angel had long golden hair and was dressed in a gown of gold satin. A pair of gossamer thin wings spread out behind the doll, fluttering gently as Holly lifted her out of the box.
‘Come on, Holly,’ Jennifer laughed, ‘it will be Christmas before she’s on the tree!’
‘Okay Mum! Okay Dad!’ Holly replied as she held out her arms so her father could lift her up to the top of the tree.
She placed the golden angel on the fir trees apex reverently along with the hand written card that had accompanied her.
“A Golden Angel to watch over you,” the card read in flowing script.
Before her father lifted her back down to the floor, Holly could have sworn that the angel winked at her.
