Harmless Wishes

‘There’s no one here,’ Dave sighed with exasperation.
‘I’m telling you, I saw a woman!’ Peta insisted, ‘This place is haunted. Shouldn’t the real estate agents have told…?’
The door had slammed behind Dave. Peta listened as her husband marched down the pebbled driveway. After ten years of marriage, Dave had finally had enough of Peta’s obsession with lost souls.
Slumping heavily down on to a chair, Peta glanced once more at the open doorway where she had first seen the ghost.
She was there again! Just watching Peta with sad eyes.
‘Why are you still here?’ Peta whispered once her pounding heart had returned to a regular rhythm, ‘Why haven’t you moved on?’
‘It is this house. There is something – odd – about it,’ the ghost answered slowly; ‘I wished that I never had to leave. And now I can’t. Be careful what you wish for right?’
Peta’s face drained of colour as she thought back to her own words when she and Dave had first moved in two days earlier.
“I love it!” Peta had cried, “I wish I could stay here forever.’
