The Palazzo del Capitanio was the seat of government authority in Padua in the Venetian period of the Serenissima, overlooking the elegant Piazza dei Signori. The building has undergone various renovations over the course of the fifteenth century. In 1532 Giovanni Maria Falconetto was in charge of the design of the new facade of the Clock Tower, which was redesigned in the form of a triumphal round arch and made of Istrian stone with four Doric columns resting on a high base, according to the classical canons of their sixteenth century.
Resting on the attic are Lion of St. Mark and the two man figures in the niches bearing the coats of arms of the mayor Giovanni Badoer and Captain John Brown.
Above the arch, in the Tower of the Palazzo del Capitanio, there is a large clock, designed by Master Novello and built in 1477 by John of Vicenza and the Caldiere Giampietro, with decorations on the face of Giorgio da Treviso. The clock not only marks the hours and minutes, but also the month, day, moon and astrological phases.
