I am a Kentish maid, passionate about Mother Nature and her bugs, as my profile will tell you at some length! I am using a Canon EOS 550...

A nature-lover in general; a bug-lover in particular. As daughter of an avid amateur entomologist, my early memories include hunting for ‘caterpillar food’, outings with a butterfly net, and hand-rearing Death’s Head Hawkmoths. And I was used to seeing collector’s boards – dead bugs spread-eagled with a pin stuck through their middle, which I hated! Now, an enthusiastic amateur photographer, I’ve discovered a new and all-consuming passion – macro-photographing bugs! Up close and personal, they are even more captivating and I can have my very own collection whilst the bugs are still alive and kicking .. or biting .. or stinging.

The macro world of insects is something so few people stop to look at or think about. Instead, they squeal and squish or vacuum with abandon. I like to share my photos with others, not necessarily because I think they are sooper-dooper (though I try!) but to try to educate or fascinate non-bug-lovers into taking a closer-look and maybe persuading them to think twice before wafting their fly-swatters around. And, in this endeavour, I am pleased to report some successes, having converted several hob-nailed, bug-busters into a steady trickle of visitors wielding plastic tupperware boxes containing bugs for identification and photographing purposes! Anyway … I digress. I feel privileged when I am offered a glimpse into an insect’s private world ~ thank you for taking the time to visit my page and taking a peek too.

Technically-speaking (ha, ha!) a trusty Fuji Finepix bridge camera was replaced a while back with my first DSLR (Canon EOS 550D) and dedicated macro lens. I am teaching myself through trial and (extremely frustrating) error and have yet to master all the technicalities. So, please feel free to critique my pictures and offer constructive advice … it will be most welcome. I am a purist at heart and none of my images are post-digitally enhanced (can’t you tell?!) other than the occasional image crop.

p.s. Thank you to my amazingly talented, fellow-Bubblers, and especially my favourite regulars (you know who you are!), for your generous and encouraging comments, which are hugely appreciated, and for always giving me something to aspire to. xx
