Artist's Description

A panoramic view of the fourth 15-cm gun installation on Dolopwuropwur (the central hill of Temwen Island), Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. The Japanese installed at least 10 guns of this variety on Pohnpei and neighboring islands as part of their fortification projects prior to WWII. The guns were designed to protect the major reef passages into Pohnpei’s lagoon from enemy ships. The U.S., however, never launched a surface invasion on Pohnpei, but instead bombed the islands extensively over the course of a year. Alex Zuccarelli © 2012. All rights reserved.
