Artist's Description

This image was taken during firefighting operations in January 2013 near Wyangala Dam in the south western slope region of New South Wales, Australia. I have named this image after the name of this fire fighting operation “Decca fire”.

The fire fighting tanker in which I was part of the Rural Fire Service crew travelling through rough country on the mountain above the Wyangala Dam. The ground around us had been burnt out in the hours earlier. This bushfire (wildfire) was volatile and unpredictable. We were making our way back down the mountain on the way to protect some farm properties which were in the direct path of the fire. In a few places lone trees like this had escaped incineration.

This photograph has not been created in photoshop. This green tree really stood out like this. Taken with a small camera at high shutter speed from an at times violently moving tanker, the terrain around us reeked of smoke and still felt hot.
