Adolescence

Awake, in the dark, anticipating
I perspire, my body anxious.
moonlight comes in slivers through the window,
blocking the tiles from full light.

glass glitters on the floor,
sparkling like light on dark waters.
A look in the mirror-
I am displayed in fragments.

this does not happen so suddenly-
This Awakening.
but I could swear that I feel it;
feel it flowing through my body-
Taking over.

mother pounding on the door.
she beats rhythmically.
I do not answer
so she turns away.

the solitude is comforting
with no watchful eyes.
No one to witness the fall of my innocence.
the eerie silence engulfs me.
I rock myself back and forth
sitting on the closed lid of the toilet.
