chapter 2 in Dark Angel Returns

“Coming in?” he asked, looking back at her standing at the water’s edge, watching him.

“I can’t swim,” she said..

Dan smiled and held out his hand. “Come on, Cam. I’ll teach you.”

She hesitated, then reached out and took his hand. She had a quiet stillness about her that he liked. Crystal was fun, a sweet kid but tiring with her boisterous non-stop prattle. Cam was different.

“It’s easy,” he said, walking her out till they were waist-deep in the sea. “I’ll hold you, don’t worry, I won’t let you sink.” He placed one hand behind her head, the other behind her back. “Just lie back. Relax. You’ll float. I’ll hold you until you are ready for me to let go. Okay?”

Cam closed her eyes and leaned back until his arms were supporting her, let herself be lowered into the sea. No struggle or panic as the water lapped over her.

“You can open your eyes,” Dan said. The sea was supporting her, his arms were in contact, bearing no weight. “You’ll float with your face out of the water,” he told her. “I’ll take my hands away for just a second so you can see that you’re floating by yourself, okay?”

She opened her eyes, looked up at him. “Okay,” she said.

“Okay,” Dan smiled. Such trust in those eyes looking up at him. This, he thought, is how a father feels towards his daughter. And with the thought, a touch of sadness. This could be the closest he’d ever come to that. The grandchild his mother was so wanting him to produce might never be. He lowered his hands a little away from her body, ready to support her again if she panicked. On the beach, Lucy was watching them. He’d been aware of her from the moment she stepped onto the sand. Was aware of her walking away.

The heat was intense. Cam wasn’t used to it, her pale skin had never been so exposed to the sun. The sky was the bleached blue of summer, the sea a cool emerald green, lapping her toes. She watched him from the water’s edge. He was swimming back towards shore.

“So, cherub. We like him, do we?” murmured Dark Angel.

“He is hurt. Like me,” she said.

“And you will make him better. When will you ask him?”

“Coming in?” Dan asked from the shallows.

“I can’t swim,” she told him.

“Come on. I’ll teach you,” he smiled.

“You can do this, cherub,” Dark Angel whispered.
