then came the smoke

there was a time
when apples ripened in the sun
and so did we
though life was hard
still we had time
to sit under the apple tree
then came the smoke
it gave us light
it gave us warmth
they said life would be
easier now
but smoke hid the sun
took away the night
brought the rush
and apples, tired and pale
like us
