the hills of home

it was a day in early Spring
after the rains had clothed the hills in velvet green
and the air was fresh, the sun was warm
that he first brought her to this place

these hills he hoped would feel to her
like the green hills she was missing so
and he hoped that here they could have a life
as soldier settler and his wife
but of his hopes he would not speak
until he could see in her eyes
if these hills could become her hills of home

they left their horses by the trees
and walked down the slope to the creek
where water wandered over rocks
from the mountain tops down to the sea
further down he took her till they came
to a sunlit spot sheltered from wind
and there he told her to look back
look back to where the horses stood
and as she did, he carefully watched
to see the smile light up her face
