Eleanor peeked over the old stone parapet that formed a protective barrier around the Museum’s roof. This was the third drive-by of the gleaming black leather and chrome cavalcade. She counted twenty-one bikes, two abreast and one in front. They rode like they owned the City but that was not so. It was the City that owned them, had spawned them and would just as easily squelch them.*

She was hoping to see Mike roll up on his rat of a bike. It was past lunch-time and all she’d had to eat so far today was an apple and a small carton of milk. Not enough breakfast for a growing girl, as Granny would tell you.

She crawled back to Night’s cubby where Eric has been hiding since the sound of the first noisy drive-by had him scampering deep into its dark. She could hear his tummy rumbling as she approached. “I know,” she said, crawling in beside him. “He’ll be here soon. With muffins.”

The unicorn’s eyes lit up and the plaintive, accusing looks she’d been getting all morning turned to a gleam of anticipation. Mike had better have those muffins!!

Suddenly Eric’s ears pricked up, his nose sniffed the air, his eyes turned to the door on the rooftop. Before she could stop him, he was up and running for the door, his mane and tail streaming behind him. Eleanor took off after him, hoping with all the hope she had that it was Mike who would be on the other side of the door when it opened.

And that he had muffins.

*Cities belong to no-one and woe-betide the deluded despot who thinks They belongs to them ….. Cities have been known to crack open the Earth and disappear into its bowels just to be rid of such self-delusioned annoyances. Sometimes Cities simply immolate. Rising from the ashes is not a problem when you’re a City. There’s always rock and someone with a chisel and hammer. Same goes for Country, although Country doesn’t need anyone, or their implements. Sometimes, City and Country merge and live happily ever after until someone with a chisel and a hammer and a team of bull-dozers comes along and the whole thing begins again.
