“He made it!” said Mike.

“Eric!! Stay!! Good boy!! Stay!!” Eleanor shouted to the unicorn, and she wished Night was there to calm him before he took off for another roof-top. This time his dog-paddle flying might not work, now that he’d had time to stop and think about what he had done. But it looked like he was trying to get up the courage to take off again. Or it could be a panic attack, this frantic running back and forth. Either one could kill him. “Eric!! Stay there!! I’m coming to get you!!”

Eric stopped but his feet didn’t; they kept running on the spot, like they had a mind of their own or perhaps a separate brain, like the Diplodocus tail. He looked at Eleanor. He looked at the next building then ran towards it, turned just before the edge, and came charging back along the roof, at full-gallop.

“He’s going to do it again!” gasped Eleanor, her hands over her mouth. She wanted to cover her eyes but had to keep them open for his sake. She wanted to scream at Mike, and hit him, and tell him this was all his fault and if Eric fell to his death she’d never, never, forgive him. But she couldn’t. She had to stay calm, had to try and exude an aura of complete confidence in Eric’s ability to dog-paddle once again through the air between them. The very high air ….

No ….. she mustn’t think that, mustn’t look down …….

And Eric leapt off the roof-top and started paddling. Behind him, the sun was rising in a big, bright red yawn.

On a small island to the south, Granny was also watching the sunrise, and Furball was watching Granny.
