Dark Angel II, 48

They spent the rest of their first day relaxing in the shade of the decking, with breakfast drifting into lunch. More of Bill’s selection of reds were waiting for them in the pantry, with a note to help themselves, which they did. A timeless kind of day, filled with easy conversation and equally easy silences. In the late afternoon a sea-breeze came up, stirring them to a walk on the beach.

Maggie wore long shorts and a loose denim shirt, making the excuse of needing to cover up because of her red hair and freckled skin. And aware as she was making the excuse that she was pointing out the very thing she was trying to hide. Her reluctance to let him see her body in bathers.

The tide was going out, leaving behind cool, rippling shallows and smooth islands of sand. Both were fascinated by their footprints being the only footprints on the freshly washed sand. Like they were the only two people on this earth. When they came to the sea, Frank took off his tee-shirt. He looked at Maggie.

“Coming in?” he asked. When she hesitated, he shook his head, smiling. “Don’t you trust yourself, Maggie?” he asked.

“What?” She felt herself blushing.

“Come on. You don’t have to protect me. I think I can handle the temptation of seeing you in your bathers.”

“Oh, you do, do you?!” Maggie retorted, then laughed, took off her shirt and tossed it at him. Stepped out of her shorts and ran into the water.

On their return, a dog was running towards them, followed by a young girl shouting, “Maggie!!”

“Some-one you know?” murmured Frank.

Maggie shielded her eyes with her hand, squinting at the fast approaching pair. “I think it’s Crystal.”

“Maggie!! Get back here!!” Crystal was shouting at the dog bouncing around Maggie and Frank. “I’m so sorry ……” she started to say, then her eyes popped wide. “Oh my God!! Maggie! It’s you!” she squealed, and wrapped herself around Maggie in a hug. “What are you doing here? I didn’t know you were here!!” Then she looked behind Maggie, at Frank, and past and around him, searching. “Is Cammie here, too?”
