Drosera peltata
Growing in the gullies of our Tasmanian blue-gum forest, this is minute. All I could see with the naked eye was sunlight glistening on the sticky drops. I had to get down on knees and elbows and use a monopod to get this shot. My first close-up of something so small, I’m enthralled by what the camera can see that I cannot. Once down there, face to face with the forest floor, there’s a whole new world to explore.

It traps and digests small insects and its naphthoquinone derivatives, enzymes, flavonoids, essential oils and organic acids have medicinal qualities, in the soothing of irritating coughs and bronchial asthma among other things. Curious, I ate one of the tiny things …. it wasn’t sticky or hairy, the initial taste was sweet like honeysuckle followed by a bitterness like dandelion. Once I had a garden with over a hundred herbs. Today I pulled out one of my herbal medicine books for the first time since coming here, all inspired because it appears I have a herbal garden growing here right under my nose :)
