Artist's Description

“Cindy!” Mum stood in the doorway, a stern, tired look on her face. “What are you doing?!”

“Mum …..” Cindy was crouched by the window, head down. “There’s ladybirds everywhere.”

“Then sweep them out, along with the leaves. For goodness sake, Cindy!”

“There’s lots of dead ones …..” murmured Cindy.

“Just hurry up and sweep them them out! Grandma will be here any minute. I don’t want the porch looking like it hasn’t seen a broom in months.”

“But why are they coming inside?”

“Who knows why? They’re bugs! Just hurry up and sweep out this mess!!”

Mum turned back towards the kitchen. Cindy continued to study the ladybirds on the floor under the window. She couldn’t just sweep them out. Some were alive. She watched another one crawl onto her hand. Perhaps they liked it inside because it was warm. She held her hand up against the baby leaves of the radish seeds sprouting in a plastic tray on the window ledge. The ladybird crawled across and joined the others already placed there. Cindy turned back to the ones on the floor, looking for any others that might be alive. Hard to tell with ladybirds, unless they moved. So many of them. It was going to take forever to touch each one with a finger and see if it stirred.

Outside, the wind picked up. It rattled the windows and door of the porch. Cindy didn’t hear the taxi pull up. She didn’t hear the gate squeaking open and clanging shut.
