On this picture is Slobodan Trkulja, Serbian multiinstrumentalist, composer and singer in traditional & Byzantium style. I made this picture on his concert in Belgrade in June 2009
Since 10 years of age, he has been passionately pursuing his interest in Balkan traditional music, exploring the sounds on every woodwind instrument he could get his hands on. In 1997. inspired by music of Peter Gabriel, he formed revolutionary group Balkanopolis that modernized traditional way of playing and pioneered new approach to tradition called “Balkan modern tradition”. With Balkanopolis he introduced serbian traditional instruments to pop and rock music, as well as symphonic music, performing “modern tradition” even with philharmonic orchestras.
After 20 years of reshaping Balkan music, 14 instruments in his suitcase, master degree in jazz and numerous awards and prizes, Slobodan & Balkanopolis daring music found it’s match in one of the worlds finest orchestras – Metropole Orchestra from Holland. Being the world’s largest pop and jazz orchestra, Metropole Orchestra is world acclaimed for it’s ability to play in every orchestral style and genre, executing it with superb craftsmanship.
Many stars have had a privilege to perform with them, Andrea Boccelli, Pat Metheny, Joe Cocker, Chaka Khan, Elvis Costello, Celine Dion, Steve Vai, Sarah Vaughan and others. The music performed on concerts of Balkanopolis & Metropole is generally considered to be “the next big thing” in the music world, breaking all the boundaries in styles and genres.
