Artist's Description

Taken July 12/09 at the Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Pull, heavyweight division. This was the largest team at 5,026 pounds and they pulled 13,100 pounds of dead weight on that sled at the end , which was a new Record Pull!
These lovely Belgians used their sheer size and will to overcome the shortcomings of not being very synchronized and also having a rookie driver. They consistently missed the hook and had to go around and attempt to re-connect. But, in the end, these big brutes pulled it all off.
These horses are bred for this work with strong necks, heavy haunches and huge hooves. They wear specially cleated horseshoes and can throw up a lot of dirt when they dig in.
Congrats to the winner!

Below I have added the video of the 2010 winner. With a new record of 13,200 pounds, he also won with brute strength and little synchronization or grace, but he is a qualified and experienced driver who made it look easy. These two monsters could have pulled a lot more weight yet, especially if they ever learned to pull in unison,
