Artist's Description

Originally a 12th century Priory located in Warwick, England, the building was dismantled and shipped to the US is 1926. The pieces were reassembled for new owners Alexander and Virginia Wenddell by architect Henry Grant Morse. The west wing is a replica of Sulgrave Manor the ancestral home of George Washington. The center section is a rebuilt portion of the original Priory. Wormleighton Manor, a Spencer-Churchill family estate in England, was the model for the east wing. The owners and their maid were killed in a train accident in 1948 and the home has since belonged to the Virginia Historical Society. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
