I Drink My Medicine Down

everything is a switch to flip
an itch to scratch
in the middle of my back
so I have to contort
both my arms and bend hard
at my elbows so the fingers
report to their stations

no one else sees the oh-what-fun
in overthinking the everythings
the tumbling down feeling
the incompleteness of isolation
when I’m alone, I twitch
and I like it,
the wonder of where will it itch next?
the joy of fingers chasing a crawl around
like I’m on a plastic horse on a merry-go-round
and the ride stops
conductor motions me off
and, sonofabitch, here march my thoughts
to carry me off

some schism surely occurred
some executioner split me in two
hell if I got an idea of what to do
I drink my medicine down
knowing full-well it’s no cure

what I need are more goddamned arms

I Drink My Medicine Down
